Changing Lives, One Act at a Time
We’re SLAWA – a women-led charity based in South London, committed to supporting African women, refugees, and asylum seekers in need. Powered by compassion and community, we’re building hope and opportunity for those facing hardship in the UK and abroad.
Rooted in Compassion, Driven by Purpose

Our founding community
SLAWA was started in 2003 by Hortense Matoko and Indra, with support from New Life Christian Centre (NLCC). Since then, we’ve grown into a close-knit team of volunteers, supporters, and community members – all dedicated to helping women thrive.

How we help
We offer practical, compassionate support — from food and clothing to care and education — helping women and families rebuild their lives.
01. We meet people where they are
Our support starts with showing up — in refugee hostels, hospital wards, temporary accommodation, and homes. Many of the people we support are newly arrived, isolated, or unsure where to turn.
We bring not only supplies like food, clothing, and hygiene items, but also dignity and warmth. Whether someone is expecting a child, recovering from illness, or facing crisis, we’re there with open hands and open hearts.
02. We offer skills and support that empower
We believe true support goes beyond survival — it’s about building a future. That’s why we run language classes (English and French), cookery and sewing workshops, and a growing homework club.
These safe, welcoming sessions give women the tools to live more independently, build income, and feel proud of their progress. From learning to sew a dress to helping a child with schoolwork, these moments matter deeply.
03. We care for those left behind
Loneliness can be just as devastating as hunger. Many elderly women in our community live alone, without family nearby. Twice a week, we gather to share meals, stories, and company. These simple gatherings reduce isolation, encourage connection, and give people something to look forward to.
No one should feel forgotten — and at SLAWA, they don’t.
04. We reach beyond borders
Though we’re based in South London, our compassion extends across continents. In 2010, SLAWA founded a rescue home for vulnerable women on the streets of Congo. When the 2012 Brazzaville explosion devastated families, we sent emergency aid. During the COVID pandemic, we delivered thousands of food boxes both locally and abroad.
Our global work is powered by the same belief that guides everything we do: that every woman deserves safety, dignity, and hope.
